SPOOKED THE GHOSTS OF WAVERLY HILLS SANATORIUM: SPOOKED REVIEW You won't find a better paranormal documentary.

Spooked DVD, a great addition to your ghost collection.

Spooked, DVD review. A paranormal documentary by the Booth Brothers. A great addition to your collection.

The Brothers Grimm told fairy tales and it scared kids. The Brothers Booth tell real ghost stories and it scares  EVERYBODY.

If you haven't read my review of The Booth Brother's  "Death Tunnel" please do so. Also read about their other paranormal documentary "The Possessed". There is also another paranormal documentary entitled  "Children of the Grave" I will be posting my review of that in a few days.

Spooked The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanatorium: This documentary came about while the filming of the above mentioned movie "Death Tunnel" was in producton at Waverly Hills sanatorium. The cast and crew experienced several incidences of paranormal activity.

The Documentary: Filmed at the sanatorium, the film is full of scenes from the hospital's past. Photos are shown from the days when Waverly was full of people infected with TB. It talks about the treatment that was administered such as setting the patients out in the open air, even in the snow, on the top floor which was open to the outside. There are photos of people from every walk of life. Some very ill and near death and others just starting out on their journey.

The lucky ones had visitors. Family was allowed to visit  from behind glass. Children are shown (and one of the spirits that persists at the hospital is apparently a child that likes to role a ball.) One of the best things about a Booth Brother's Documentary is that they always have people who were involved to interview.  (Most documentaries do have interviews, but let me remind you, waverly opened in '1910 and closed once and for all  in 1980 while it was a geriatrics center. It hadn't been a TB hospital since 1961 and they still found people alive to interview, amazing.) We see interviews of patients who had been there, families of patients and also former employees. Many of them either wouldn't or couldn't take about the ghostly aspect of the hospital. But the ones that did talk said loud and clear that Waverly, even back then had some other worldly visitations.
There were reportedly suicides of a few nurses, stories aren't exactly clear, but that is the way of history, it gets clouded over time. However, some former employees and patients do confirm that there was at least one.

Even the outside of the Waverly Hills Sanatorium is haunted . Security guards report seeing "creature like" things (for lack of a better word) scurrying around in the forest. And of course, the scariest and most haunted place in the hospital, the "Body chute", or "Death Tunnel". This was an exit from within the hospital where orderlies removed bodies from the hospital to the back of the property to be transported to morgues etc. There were thousands of people's remains removed through this tunnel. Everything from gasping for breath, disembodies voices to bumps and more have been heard and even recorded in this tunnel or chute.

You won't find a better paranormal documentary. I have a large collection and some of them are very good. However, the brothers seem to have a personal touch, they are passionate about their films and it shows in the finished product.

THE POSSESSED DVD Review Haunting and Startling, all things Supernatural

THE POSSESSED (2009) (Spooked Television Releasing) As seen on Sci Fi Channel. Directed by The Booth Brothers. DVD Review by HorrorNews.net. SYNOPSIS: The belief in possession by evil spirits plagued the darkness of the 18th century. Madness and hysteria spread, classifying the cripples and mentally ill as "Being under the control of the Devil". These misfits became the victims of bizarre exorcisms or " Casting Out Rituals". Banished and removed from society they were locked away inside brutal asylums. Left helpless, alone and afraid they were branded "The Possessed".

REVIEW: "Angels to Some Devils to others" - no we're not talking about the Hellraiser films. Our journey is an investigation in the form of the recent "The Possessed". A documentary covering specific cases of reported possessions. Several instances are featured though the primary one comes in the form of the "Watseka Wonder". A rather bizarre case that extends not one generation but an additional possession of another in town. Mary Roff who died at the young age of 18 was a sufferer of seizure episodes and violent fits all her life. In 1877, things were different with many of these case easily dismissed as insanity without the present medial knowledge we have today. Mary Roff is explored, researched and contacted though psychic mediums. The results are startling.

The Booth Brothers put together another fine documentary piece that explores this very phenomena. In the course of the film, we also hear about cases such as the Annilease Michel (Emily Rose ) case, Dewi Morlaine, Marcus Tallbull, Kelly March and Michael Jones (who dies 26 times as a primi baby). Each of these cases are documented possession cases that are still highly controversial to this day. Though the clips are intertwined more in the scheme of the film rather than into great detail. The intent here is to unravel the mystery of Mary Roff and Lurancy Vennum.

Devices such as an Ovilus are used to read energy into words. While the device is questionable, the words chosen are what is haunting about it's results. A rather unique device, that I don't fully understand.

The question asked is, is this possession or reincarnation? Lurancy Vennum became overtaken by the spirit of Mary Roff at the age of 2. Evidence presented shows that Lurancy was indeed possessed due to the details she verbalized without having any any relation or previous knowledge of The Roff family. As we dig deeper we find that Mary Roff often spoke in foreign tongues for no reason and possessed clairvoyance skills in which she could even read the contents of a sealed envelop. Mary who died at the young age of 18 became fascinated before hand with Bloodletting and the use of leeches to purge the evil spirits. the whole ordeal was furthered damaged by her families action to put her into a mental asylum. Whatever the case may be, the finger points to a possession of pure evil rather than angelic.

Through investigations we find similarities in the fascination known as "cutting" who Kelly March confesses to. Even to the bizarre extent of cutting so bad the flesh would literally hang off. Argued that the action was a result of the person claiming to rid of evil spirits, this is also a modern day affliction that many actually suffer from due to mental issues.

Visits to asylums are chilling in there current day distressed forms. A tour reveals some highly dangerous methods used in the old days involving the drilling into one's skull "intrepidation" and former elements used to experiment on the mentally ill. In one report, we are shown a chair that a patient was strapped to for 6 months while there head was enclosed in a covered box. Other methods reveal extreme temperature water tubs used to shock the systems. In any case these were times of extreme questionable medical practices.

Overall, while the film projects a haunting ghostly tone, there is a solid sense of compassion for the sick and troubled. I was personally hoping to see more of the original Emily Rose case Annilease Michel but it was only mentioned in passing with some quick footage. The audio though from that case is beyond frightening.

As in previous releases the team uses a variety of tools to help define the evidence. These include EVP's, thermal imaging, heat sensors, and help from seances, mediums and psychics. The film features a nice mix of scenes, from person to person who were subjected some degree to possession and spiritual activity. A fascinating piece indeed.

It's strength comes in the evidence and progress made on the Roff and Venumm cases that resolve and emphasize the notion of life after death and the spirits that linger. I think the production fits perfectly in with the level of consumer interest in all things supernatural. The product is well done and the story is equally impressive.

Death Tunnel: Death Tunnel Not just another ghost story. Las Vegas Examiner DVD review

Las Vegas Examiner The Possessed DVD Review. When you watch their films you think wow, this is twisted!!

DVD review The Possessed paranormal documentary Booth Brothers. Reality TV and DVDs delve into the paranormal.
The paranormal is everywhere you look. TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) is on Sci-Fi Channel with a domestic and an international edition. TAPS actually tries to debunk hauntings they investigate and what is left after everything has been debunked is "possibly" paranormal. They take all cases, but most are historical or people with children who are afraid of what's in their home. A&E has Paranormal State .  A group of people from a Penn State Paranormal club try to help people with "evil" hauntings in their homes. This groups does a great deal of work with "demonic" hauntings. If you believe or not, both shows are entertaining and give you chills from time to time.

Paranormal DVDs; There are any number of DVD sets of the above shows and of former TV shows that delved into the paranormal. Then there is "The Booth Brothers" DVDs. I first discovered these two indie filmmakers on Myspace. I have several paranormal groups on my friends list and that of course attracts more. After receiving and accepting a friends request from "Death Tunnel". I started to pay attention to The Brothers Booth. Death Tunnel made my top 50 scariest horror movies. Christopher Saint and Philip are twin brothers from the UK. When you look at them you think, Rock 'n Rollers, long haired and British.  When you watch their films you think, wow, this is twisted! Their newest release is entitled "The Possessed". It is the third in a series of documentaries on the paranormal. This DVD covers "The Watseka Wonder".

From the website; Based on the True Story, “The Watseka Wonder”, America's first documented possession of 1877. A chilling journal of a 13-year-old girl from the small town of Watseka, IL who became possessed by spirits of the insane dead! A terrifying journey into the world of the supernatural as we witness first hand, True cases of possession as told by the victims themselves. Filmed on location at the actual haunted houses and insane asylums of “ The Possessed”. WARNING: Contains disturbing images of real possession! May not be suitable for all audiences.

The DVD
In true Booth Brothers style, this DVD is dark, both literally and content wise. They take you through the case, and also go on side trips to visit contemporary teens who were "possessed". Including some discussion of the real woman from the "Emily Rose" case. The trip through the Watseka case shows us the Victorian age death of a teenage girl and several years later the possession of another girl also in Watseka by the girl who died. This is a very short version of what the DVD covers, but for times sake it suffices to tell you the bare bones story, let the DVD fill in the meat. As in the other documentaries (see below), there is a history lesson that almost always (at least should) come with every paranormal story of this magnitude and the brothers gives us the story. Interviewed in the film are people who actually knew members of families involved. Also interviewed is the man who is the owner of one of the homes where the possession took place. I did some research online to check out the story the brothers tell,  I could find no case documenting possession as well as this movie does.

From the spookedtv.com site. "The belief in possession by evil spirits plagued the 18th century. Madness and hysteria spread classifying the mentally ill as “Being under the control of the Devil”. These sad misfits became the victims of bizarre exorcisms or “Casting Out Rituals”. Banished from society they were locked away inside brutal asylums and branded, “The Possessed”! A few of these asylums are visited. They actually catch a "spirit" on film in one of them. I can confirm for you that the mentally ill can be "labeled" as possessed by certain sections of the Christian community. I've seen it happen. Be it true or not, this DVD is entertaining and very very creepy. It's worth watching and keeping in your collection to show for Halloween or other events that warrant the watching of scary DVDs.Sci-Fi Channel is the outlet where the Booth's films are shown. They are released under their Indie Co. Spooked TV.

Other DVDs by the Booth Brothers.
Death Tunnel. Horror movie based on true happenings at the Waverley Hills Sanatorium. A TB hospital.  The movie was actually filmed at the old sanatorium which still stands and has guided tours and also Halloween events. It is located in Louisville Kentucky.

Spooked. A documentary that arose from the filming of Death Tunnel. The cast and crew experienced lots of weird happenings during their time there and the brothers ended up doing a documentary on the sanatorium and it's tragic history. (TAPS did a Halloween special live from their last year and other shows have also featured this paranormal hot spot. )

Children of the Grave. This is a documentary about the children that were left abandoned as orphans or as throw away kids. They were housed in state run institutions where they were given milk that was tainted. Thousands died and many mass graves and graves marked with only numbers are shown. A few of these buildings are still standing and they are investigated with some scary results. Also featured is a place in Missouri called "Zombie Road". The film crew caught a lot of film with "anomalies". One particular scene is shown from a road looking up to a tree linked ridge. On the ridge are the shadow figures of as many as twenty or more children. At least they are little short shadows. The sight of this part of the film is horrifying. Lots more happens that is also very disturbing. The Possessed is actually a follow up to Children of the Grave. A great follow up.
